Liquefied gas for heating cottages: make a choice

Satisfied with the benefits of civilization, which no longer seem such, many Russians reached out to nature. And it’s already in the order of things that the most ordinary cottage is not a tiny house for shelter from the rain and for storing a summer cottage tool, but a residential house equipped with everything necessary.

Two-pipe closed heating system: 1 - boiler, 2 - car air heater, 3 - thermostatic valve, 4 - heating radiator, 5 - balancing valve, 6 - tank to compensate for thermal expansion of the coolant, 7 - ball valve, 8 - main strainer for rough cleaning coolant, 9 - circulation pump, 10 - thermomanometer for measuring pressure and temperature, 11 - safety valve.

Heating a private house with liquefied gas, electricity or wood is simply necessary to preserve furniture, household appliances throughout the year.

When the house has all the conditions for living, then I do not want to leave the suburban housing unattended for the whole winter. Some people prefer to live there all year round, others visit cold weather to spend the whole family on a weekend there, celebrate holidays with friends, and take a steam bath. But then it is worth considering in more detail such a question as heating a summer house with liquefied gas.

Is there an alternative?

To date, the following methods of heating private housing are known:

  • natural gas flowing through the main pipeline;
  • electric boiler;
  • solid fuel: firewood, coal;
  • pellet boiler;
  • liquefied gas in cylinders.

Each option has its advantages and disadvantages. If we take into account that the gas main is not even in all urban-type settlements, then it is unlikely that it was brought to the summer cottage. And if they promise to let her down, then not as soon as we would like.

The cost of heating a house is 200 m2.

The most commonplace solid fuel today is also not cheap, but the main drawback of this type is far from the price. If you heat the cottage with wood or coal, you must certainly be there every day.

Electricity is considered one of the most expensive ways to heat your home. Therefore, many use it in addition to solid fuel, to maintain temperature during periods of absence in the country. The electric boiler itself is much cheaper than a gas boiler, but the price of electricity is growing every year.

Fuel granules from wood (pellets) are widely distributed in Europe, Denmark, Sweden. For Russia, this is still a rare occurrence, but also takes place in homes where the owners care about the environmental cleanliness of the fuel. It is convenient that the pellets are poured into a special hopper and automatically fed into the pellet boiler, without any physical effort. Compared to pipeline gas, they will cost 3 times more expensive, if you do not include in the estimate all the stages of gas transmission, starting with the project.

Several reasons for liquefied natural gas

Having considered all the pros and cons, summer residents often opt for equipping the cottages with individual gas equipment and there are the following reasons for this:

Scheme of a gas boiler.

  1. The gas boiler can be used the same, regardless of whether the pipeline uses natural gas or propane - butane from a cylinder. Over time, when the main gas is available in the holiday village, it can easily be converted to another option by replacing the nozzle.
  2. The cost of gas equipment quickly pays off.
  3. The price is slightly higher than the main analogue, but cheaper than electricity, which, when disconnected, will deprive the possibility of heating.

In addition, you can do without the cost of expensive gas equipment if the estimated area of the heated room does not exceed 40 m². For the room and kitchen, gas convectors, which are available in various capacities from 1.8 to 5 kW, are quite suitable for heating. The convector of the smallest capacity is able to maintain the required room temperature of up to 18 m². Using a 5 kW convector, an area of up to 45 m² is heated.

We make the necessary calculations and conclusions

If the plans of the owners are not only heating a limited area of the country house, but also providing hot water, then it is better to use the classic gas system. Gas convectors operating on liquefied gas are more suitable only for heating the room. Moreover, the lack of a water circuit in them will allow, if necessary, to dismantle the system in a matter of minutes.

In the case of installing one gas convector with a capacity of 1.8 kW, all expenses will be in the amount of 20 thousand rubles. The most expensive in this system will be the convector itself with a coaxial set of pipes providing air intake and chimney - about 6 thousand rubles. In addition, you will need steel pipes connecting the convector to a gas cylinder, the LPG cylinder itself, a reducer, flexible wiring and a ball gas valve. A 50-liter cylinder operating at full capacity will provide heat for 150 hours. But you still need to have spare cylinders so as not to be without heat in case of refueling. The liquefied gas cylinder is usually placed in a metal cabinet located outside the living room. There is also a payment for installation work, since it should be exclusively dealt with by specialists.

A more expensive option is the installation of complete gas equipment with the expectation of its subsequent connection to the main gas. It is important to choose a gas boiler with high efficiency, otherwise heating with liquefied gas will be completely unprofitable. Costs will be at least 100 thousand.

As practice shows, in order to provide not only heating of the cottage with liquefied gas with an area of 100 m², but also to have hot water supply, it will take 2 cylinders of 50 liters per week. Moreover, several cylinders (3-4) should be connected to the boiler at once, so as not to often engage in their replacement. And since it also takes time to refuel, you need to have extra cylinders in stock. Thus, 8 gas cylinders will be emptied per month, the average refueling of which will cost the owner 4 thousand rubles (500 rubles per cylinder). In different regions of Russia, this figure may be slightly lower, but the cost of shipping cylinders to the place of refueling should also be added to the costs. DPS workers are vigilant to ensure that more than 3 gas cylinders are not transported at one time without permission. So, you have to ply often. Nevertheless, under certain conditions, heating with liquefied gas is justified.

If you want to reduce costs, you can equip the boiler with the function of automatically lowering the temperature at a certain time of the day and take care of high-quality insulation of the house, which is also important from the point of view of economy. And, perhaps, someone’s home area is half as much as in the above example.
