Types of vinyl wallpaper, their pros and cons

A wide variety

In today's article, we will talk about the types of vinyl wallpaper, their pros and cons. In addition to the advantages and disadvantages, we will talk about wallpaper on a non-woven and paper basis, which are the most common in today's market of materials for decoration and interior. This type of decoration materials got its name from the name of the raw materials used in its decoration (polyvinyl chloride, or PVC). Depending on how the external decorative coating was applied, as well as on what the base material is (non-woven or paper), the names of various types of vinyl canvases occur.

In any modern wallpaper store you can find a wide variety of vinyl wallpapers

One of the classifications of this material divides vinyl wallpapers into the following types:

  • Flat.
  • Foamed.
  • Dense.

Classification

So, what would each of these types be?

Flat vinyl wallpaper

In addition to this common name, this type of canvas is known as wallpaper hot stamping. As for the manufacturing technique of this variety of wallpaper coatings, it is based on the silk-screen methodfui. It is this circumstance that explains the fact that such canvases are so thin.

As for technology, the outer layer, consisting of vinyl, is applied over a paper or fabric (textile) base. Well, now let's talk about other varieties of vinyl paintings.

Examples of photos of flat vinyl wallpapers:

Foamed vinyl

Their characteristic feature, which immediately catches your eye, is a noticeable texture. Thanks to the presence of such an obvious relief, it becomes possible to simulate various materials:

  • Decorative plaster.
  • Natural stone.
  • Natural wood.
  • Ceramic tiles and many others.

As for production technology, foamed vinyl wallpapers are made by embossing. In other words, the pattern is "squeezed out" on their surface. Due to the high level of density, they can become an ideal coating for those parts of the apartment that are characterized by a high level of atmospheric humidity. They are highly resistant both to mechanical damage and to the effects of various kinds of splashes and liquids, including fat, which is a constant problem for the kitchen as well as the dining room.

The opinion of designers! One of the advantages of this type of vinyl wallpaper is that they often use various decorative additives, including sparkles, colored chips, etc.

We must not forget that it is precisely such canvases that have one variety that can be used for painting. And, of course, it is worth mentioning that a number of manufacturers produce structural wallpapers, which include a high level of resistance to the ingress of dirt of various origins, as well as cracks, cuts and scratches.

Thick vinyl wallpaper

As you can guess from the name, this particular type is the most durable and resistant to mechanical damage. In most cases, its decorative layer is not matte, but rather has a glossy surface.

It must be said that solid vinyl is known for its large enough mass, which makes its installation, if not difficult, then at least specific. Rather, not even the installation itself, but the selection of glue necessary for gluing. Both the manufacturers themselves in their instructions, and experienced masters in recommendations and reviews, are strongly advised to use special types of adhesive compositions. To be precise, when gluing dense vinyl wallpapers, it is necessary to apply a special glue, not universal, since it can not guarantee the ideal quality of work and long service life. Well, now that we have covered the main varieties of this wall covering, let's move on to the main advantages and disadvantages that are characteristic of vinyl paintings.

The main advantages

One of the most obvious advantages of a material is that it has a high level of strength. As already noted a little higher in our article, this can be largely explained by the fact that these canvases consist of two layers: a dense base (especially in those cases when it comes to vinyl wallpapers on a non-woven basis, since non-woven has special strength.

A similar approach, in which it was decided to use a combination of different materials and focus on the merits of each of them, was very justified. The fact is that a coating of synthetic origin performs not only a decorative function. It is on it that the task of counteracting moisture, mechanical damage and other, potentially dangerous environmental influences lies. As for the paper or non-woven backing, also called the bottom layer, it gives the vinyl wallpaper strength, elasticity and stability.

It so happened that among some people a myth has spread about the environmental danger of PVC wallpaper. As an obvious minus, it is indicated that they are harmful to human health. Of course, any myths have a certain underlying motive. And in our case, this is also true. Nevertheless, an important remark is necessary here. Such a disadvantage of vinyl wallpaper as harm to health and the environment, relates primarily to poor-quality products of obscure origin. The fact is that such wallpapers, as a rule, are produced without any compliance with production standards and rules, which, ultimately, affects their operational characteristics.

What to do to avoid similar products? The main thing you need to understand: there are no cheap products from unknown manufacturers that meet all environmental standards. That is why most professionals recommend choosing in favor of well-known and trusted manufacturers. In addition, when purchasing, it is necessary to check the certificates of conformity of the goods. Of course, this will not be able to 100% protect you from poor-quality products, however, in any case, it will significantly reduce the likelihood of "running into" such a product.

So, let's talk briefly about other advantages of vinyl wallpaper:

  • Possibility of gluing on various types of surfaces, from drywall to wood, chipboard, plaster and even concrete.
  • Due to the texture or pattern, they are able to cover minor damage located on the surface of the wall.
  • Often in wallpaper stores you can find coatings that can be washed using special detergents.
  • Ample opportunities for use in various rooms (kitchen, hallway, living room and even toilet).
  • A variety of colors and stylistic solutions, which helps to choose the right option for any interior style.

In addition, there are other benefits that many do not think about, but in vain:

  1. The ability to choose both standard narrow and wide meter-long wallpapers, the use of which significantly speeds up the repair time.
  2. The presence in the catalogs of many manufacturers of high-end product lines, which will be very useful for finishing luxury and individual interiors.

Be that as it may, these products, as, indeed, any other, are not without certain drawbacks. Let's see what should be considered when buying vinyl wallpaper.

The main disadvantages

Often it so happens that the main advantages are the "reverse side of the coin." So, in our case, one cannot fail to mention that the resistance of the outer layer of the material to moisture adversely affects the intensity of air penetration. In other words, such wallpapers "do not breathe", in simple language of the layman.

Attention! This disadvantage can be leveled using special technology, which provides for the presence of so-called micropores. This material perfectly passes air in the right amount. At the same time, it resists moisture penetration. The only “but”: wallpapers of this type today remain quite an expensive pleasure, and, therefore, they are not always available to the average buyer.

In addition, it should be noted that gluing vinyl wallpapers on a paper basis, just like on non-woven fabric, is not such an easy task. At the very least, the process itself is more complex compared to, for example, simple paper webs. The thing is that if during gluing the instructions and recommendations were not followed, this, in most cases, will lead to sharply negative consequences. Wallpaper can shrink in width, forming discrepancies at the joints, it is possible to form air bubbles under the panel, ugly folds, etc.

And finally, one cannot fail to mention such an obvious drawback of vinyl wallpaper as their inability to tolerate significant and rapid changes in temperature. In addition, they react very poorly to changes in humidity levels. Similar manifestations are quite rare. However, they can remind of themselves, for example, when airing a room in the cold winter time, when it is a significant minus on the street, and inside the room - the usual room temperature, say +23 degrees. In such cases, the wallpaper pasted on the walls may be subject to some deformation. To avoid such problems, experienced craftsmen advise installing additional equipment in the rooms: an air humidifier, or, if necessary, air conditioning.
