African paper beads - detailed master class with photo

The legendary master class on making beautiful African paper beads has become legendary.

You will not believe - these African beads are made of paper! But by the appearance of this you can not say at all. How deceptive is the appearance! I invite you to a master class on making this jewelry.

Paper strip preparation

Using a craft knife and a ruler, cut out a pattern for each type of bead from black paper.

The photo shows the shapes of beads and the sizes of paper strips from left to right:

"rugby ball" - length 40 cm, width 3 cm, the strip gradually narrows to 6 mm;

"barrel" - length 45 cm, width 3 cm, the strip narrows to 1.5 cm;

"small cylinder" - length 15 cm, width 8 mm.

Place each template on a piece of white paper and draw a pencil around it.

Cut the white blanks of beads using an ornamental knife and a ruler.

Iron each strip with a scissor blade.

A paper strip prepared in this way becomes pliable and convenient for further work.

Paper curling process

Use a pair of scissors to cut a few wooden skewers so that you get suitable rods. Attach the wide edge of the strip to the shaft and start wrapping it tightly around it. Make sure that the edges of the beads are even on both sides.

Sizing of twists

When the bead is almost ready, apply PVA glue with a cocktail stick to the inside of the tip of the paper strip. Lock the strip and press for a few minutes with your finger, waiting for the glue to set. Repeating these steps, make the rest of the beads. Keep in mind that up to three beads can be planted on each wooden rod.

Draw a transverse pattern

Decide on the pattern with which you are going to decorate each bead. If there are transverse stripes in it, start applying them with markers, trying to keep the lines straight and clear. In order to simplify the task, you can first designate the outer edge of each strip and only then paint over its middle.

Apply a protective coating

Take a flat brush and cover each bead with a thick layer of PVA glue diluted in water - this will protect the jewelry from moisture and prevent the structure from “scattering”. In order to dry the beads, take an empty cardboard box and place on it a kind of barbecue - halves of skewers with beads mounted on them.

Coloring Beads

After the protective layer has dried, do the "decoration". Using relief paint for the fabric, give free rein to your imagination: draw gold, black and white zigzags, lines, dots and generally anything you want on the beads. Dry the beads in a tried and tested way, and then carefully remove each of them from the skewer.

Make beads

Put the finished beads on the table in the order you have chosen. Try to get the most spectacular combinations of colors, shapes and patterns. Start stringing the beads one by one on a lace (silk, leather, elastic synthetic) or ribbon. Having strung a bead, tie the lace with a double knot - such nodules located between the beads will help fix each of them in their place.

Schematic Description

A - Textured pattern

Relief paint makes the texture of beads more diverse, forming protrusions that smoothly bend around their rounded surface.

B - Patterns

The same patterns are repeated on beads - zigzags, lines and dots. In addition, all beads are designed in black, white and gold. Due to this, each of them organically fits into the overall pattern of the necklace.

B - Safety nodules

The knots tied to the necklace not only hold the beads in place, but also become part of the overall decorative pattern.

Beads are ready! As you can see, they are made very quickly and from available materials.
